Dear Institute Friend,
It is too soon to know what the state of justice will be under the new presidency. But, I do know that significant challenges lie ahead in advancing racial and social justice, particularly at the federal level.
We refuse to go backwards. Our vision for New Jersey remains bold, progressive, and focused on investing in our future: our youth. This month we will release a report that shows the extreme racial disparities in our youth prisons. Black children and their families are bearing the brunt of this failing system—even though Black and white children commit similar offenses at comparable rates.
Incarcerated children are more likely to end up in adult prisons, less likely to earn a quality education, and, on average, earn far less than their peers. In other words, putting a child in prison all but condemns them to a life of poverty and prison.
With your help, we will work to build strong and healthy urban communities with child-centered alternatives to incarceration. We envision a New Jersey where no child is imprisoned.
But we can’t do it alone. We ask you to make a donation to the Institute today, and join us in the fight for the future of our youth. We might not know what will happen in Washington in the upcoming years, but we can make New Jersey a standard bearer for social justice.
