The Institute’s Home Repair Financing Pilot Program in East Orange and its local and state advocacy around predatory lending and the subprime mortgage foreclosure crisis highlight and challenge the lack of access to safe, affordable credit in urban areas, demonstrating that there are responsible, credit-worthy individuals who receive sub-standard financial services because of the neighborhood in which they live.

Urban Homeowners and the "American Dream"

When the Institute became involved in her case, Beatrice Troup was a 74-year-old African-American woman who had lived in her home in Newark for more than 40 years. She owned her home free and clear. She was targeted by a home-repair contractor who convinced her to undertake home repairs that were eventually financed in an amount exceeding $46,000.
