New Jersey Ex-Felon Voting Rights Forum on Friday, June 17, 2005
New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey will host the "Ex-Felon Voting Rights Forum" as part of his "Be Powerful, Be Heard" voter outreach and awareness initiative under the Help America Vote Act of 2002" (HAVA). The forum will take place at the College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ from 9:30am to 12 noon, and is open to the public.
New Jersey Appellate Court To Consider the Issue of Felony Disenfranchisement
The ACLU-NJ and the Constitutional Litigation Clinic at Rutgers Law School filed a lawsuit last year challenging the denial of voting rights to persons on probation or parole in New Jersey. The lawsuit, the first in the nation to raise a state constitutional challenge to such a law, maintains that because minorities are vastly overrepresented in the criminal justice system, laws denying probationers and parolees the right to vote result in a denial of the New Jersey Constitution's guarantee of Equal Protection under the law. The lower court ruled against plaintiffs, and the case will now be considered by an appellate court
New Book: The Center for Community Problem Solving Reentry Guide
The Center for Community Problem Solving will celebrate publication of the First New York Edition of "The Center for Community Problem Solving Reentry Guide: A Handbook for People Coming Out of Jails and Prisons and for Their Families and Communities." The event will take place on Wednesday, June 15, 2005, from 7-9:00 p.m. at Lipton Hall, 108-110 West Third Street, New York University School of Law. New Jersey Department of Corrections Hosts Collaboration Meeting for Groups Applying for U.S. Department of Labor Funding
The New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJDOC) is hosting a Collaboration Meeting for faith-based and community organizations that are applying for the U.S. Department of Labor's Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative Demonstration Grants. All organizations in the State of New Jersey that intend to apply for these funds are welcome to attend. The meeting will be held on Tuesday,
National Reentry Spotlight: The National Media Outreach Campaign
The Reentry National Media Outreach Campaign highlights reentry issues, and using the media, seeks to motivate and mobilize community action, expand public awareness and work in partnership with local organizations and initiatives to "foster public safety and support healthy communities." Its media resources are designed to facilitate discussion and decision-making about solution-based reentry programs while engaging faith and secular organizations, parole and probation departments, departments of correction, government agencies, community leaders, advocates and crime victims, policymakers, and formerly incarcerated men and women.
National Institute of Justice Conference: Evidence Based Policies and Practices
NIJ's Annual Research and Evaluation Conference connects policymakers and practitioners to the latest research findings in the criminal justice arena. For the past 12 years, nationally and internationally recognized leaders in criminal justice research, policy, and practice have attended to share ideas, solve problems, and initiate discussions about pressing issues of the day. This year's conference will focus on "Evidence-Based Policies and Practices" and will be held in Washington D.C. from July 18-20, 2005.
Summary of OSI Forum: "A World Apart: Women, Prison and Life Behind Bars"
On June 2, the Open Society Institute hosted a panel discussion to mark the publication of Soros Justice Fellow Cristina Rathbone's new book, "A World Apart: Women, Prison and Life Behind Bars." The forum provided a discussion on the drastic effects that skyrocketing incarceration rates have on women and their families.
