We analyze the root causes of disparities by conducting rigorous research and analysis.

Once we have identified root causes by engaging directly with urban residents and key stakeholders, we ‘dig deep’ in order to document the issues at hand: NJISJ produces high-quality, data-driven research and analysis that shape policy agendas, influence public opinion, and inform citizens. Consequently, our evidence-based recommendations drive policy reform and lay the groundwork for community-based programmatic solutions that build opportunity at the local level.

  On February 24th, 2009, the Institute, along with many other organizations, held a License Reinstatement Fair at the Essex County College to help some 300 NJ residents reinstate their suspended driver licenses.

• DO NO HARM: A BRIEFING PAPER ON THE REENTRY OF GANG-AFFILIATED INDIVIDUALS IN NEW JERSEY ()
  Provides background information and identifies promising strategies to help guide New Jersey's policy and practice on the reentry of gang-affiliated individuals. Emphasizing evidence-based strategies that could be used to make gang activity less violent and pervasive, the paper synthesizes and translates existing approaches that could be implemented in New Jersey to improve reentry outcomes for this population.

• MORAL PANIC PRESS RELEASE ()
  MORAL PANIC is the Institute's first film that brings together the voices of policymakers, law enforcement, community-based activists, faith leaders, educators, researchers, and gang members themselves, who explain their own motivations, aspirations, and challenges. The 30-minute film features original interviews with Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy, among many others.

• AN EVALUATION OF THE NEWARK/ESSEX CONSTRUCTION CAREERS CONSORTIUM PRE-APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAM ()
  Newark/Essex Construction Careers Consortium, which is managed by the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice in collaboration with over 20 community partners, trains low-income, minority, and female residents of the City of Newark and Essex County to obtain apprenticeships in the construction industry. This study finds pre-apprenticeship programs boost earnings of low-income adults who complete the program.
