John H. Lowenstein, Ph.D.

John H. Lowenstein Mr. Lowenstein joined the faculty of the New York University Department of Physics in 1974. His research specialties have been on the theory of particles and fields (until 1988), nonlinear dynamics and chaos (after 1988). He has published 70 papers in scientific journals. Since 1995, he has maintained an active collaboration with a colleague at Queen Mary, University of London. 

John Lowenstein was born on March 15, 1941, in Newark, NJ. The son of Alan and Amy Lowenstein, John grew up in the Forest Hill section of Newark, attending Newark Academy (then located on First St.) and graduating in 1958. He then attended Harvard University, for his A.B., University of Illinois, for his M.S. in physics and the University of Illinois, for his Ph.D. in physics.

As Associate Professor of NYU in 1974, John received his tenure in 1979 and he was promoted to full professor in 1981. He served one term (1985-88) as chairman of the department.  He retired in 2007 and continues to teach a graduate-level course and conduct his theoretical research at N.Y.U. as Professor Emeritus of Physics. Mr. Lowenstein has held postdoctoral research positions at the University of Minnesota, Universidade de São Paulo, and University of Pittsburgh.

He has been married to Marcia Lowenstein (nee Greenberg) since 1967. John and Marcia have been living in Manhattan since 1972. They have two sons, Ethan (born 1970) and Alexander (born 1973), and two granddaughters, Ruby (born 1999) and Jasmine (born 2003).

John has been on the Board of NJISJ since its inception, chairing its Investment Committee and serving on its Executive Committee.
